A recent addition to our renewable portfolio is a wind power development in Grant, County, W.Va. Partnering with Shell WindEnergy Inc., we own a 50 percent share in NedPower Mount Storm, which includes 132 wind turbines. The wind farm produces 264 megawatts of power - enough to serve at least 66,000 homes. The project became fully operational in late 2008. (>> Learn more.)
The electricity generated by the turbines and other wind projects on the Appalachian ridges will flow across power lines to our customers in the Commonwealth, including those in Northern Virginia.
The 500,000-volt transmission line that Dominion has proposed to increase the supply and reliability in Northern Virginia will be crucial in getting this energy to the Commonwealth. And the power is needed - Northern Virginia's electric demand has grown about 40 percent over the last decade and is projected to grow by another 8 percent by 2011.
Fowler Ridge Wind Farm
Dominion also has acquired interest in the Fowler Ridge Wind Farm from BP Alternative Energy Inc. The facility is in Benton County, Indiana, about 90 miles northwest of Indianapolis.
Commercial operation of Phase I began on April 15, 2009. The first 400 megawatts of the project will generate enough carbon-free electricity to power approximately 120,000 average homes. Of the 400-megawatt facility, BP and Dominion are partners on approximately 300 megawatts. The two companies could expand the facility to a total of 750 megawatts in the future. (>> News release)
Dominion and BP Alternative Energy North America Inc. also plan to jointly develop, own and operate other wind energy projects in Virginia. (>> Read about this agreement.)
